When Philippe Starck-designed SLS South Beach opened doors in 2012—giving a major facelift to a 1939 Art-Deco building—it put the nail in the coffin to several surrounding boutiques, and with good reason. Sam Nazarian (of SBE group) tricked out Hyde Beach, its overpacked oceanfront pool and adjoining beach party that Philippe Starck calls "a sexy hell." Lenny Kravitz raised the bar for celebrity-designed suites with his imaginative Presidential Suite. And celebrity chef Jose Andres made his Miami debut with The Bazaar, an internationally famous molecular gastronomy restaurant brimming with dolled-up diners and perpetual neck craning.
Visionary and quite dreamy, SLS South Beach's design is whimsical and edgy, like the 700-pound, 10-foot tall silver ducky anchoring the outdoor pool deck. And, unlike other nearby hotels, a private, luxury Lincoln house car is at your beck and call. Because the hotel is all about the exterior, the Femme Coiffure Salon has become a favorite for locals. The rooms—starting at 252-square feet—may be on the smaller side, but we're assuming you won't be camping out in them all day.
