Portland is increasingly a must-visit for innovative professionals in fields as varied as digital media and marketing, urban planning, food, and green technology, and the Nines offers luxurious accommodations without betraying the Oregon city’s reputation for progressive thinking and imagination on all fronts. Hovering on the top floors of the historic Meier & Frank building, this hotel boasts everything from LEED silver certification to the quirky Urban Farmer steakhouse, which serves a menu with an emphasis on sustainable, grass-fed beef and a signature “moonshine punch.”
A breathtaking hub of high design, the Nines treats guests to a visual blend of old and new -- bright-colored baroque chairs coupled with modern, minimalist tables and beds, for example. From the rooftop eatery, the luxurious Asian-fusion restaurant Departure, you’ll have sweeping views of downtown all the way out to the majestic peaks of the Cascades. Plus, the Nines is centrally located in one of the country’s most walkable cities; within minutes by foot or light rail, you’re at any one of Portland’s renowned hubs of outdoor recreation, live music, or indie-merchant shopping.
Beautiful, contemporary baroque (is that a term?) hotel right downtown. The rooftop restaurant, Departures, is one of my favorites in the city. Amazing vegan desserts! (Ask for the special menus.)
